Clean Drinking Water at Just Rs 10-12 Per Month

A team led by an IIT-Madras professor has devised a cheap and effective method to produce clean drinking water reports The Hindu.

It will soon be possible to produce 10 litres of water — free of bacteria and virus — at just Rs. 10-12 per month, for the daily consumption of a family of five.

Prof. T. Pradeep of the department of chemistry at IIT-M and his team have made use of silver nanoparticles to achieve this feat.

Apart from being affordable, silver nanoparticles coated on a composite do not require electricity or hydrostatic pressure to produce potable water. Read more..


Meghalaya Woman Scientist Selected for Young Scientist Award

Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, a young woman scientist from Meghalaya has been selected for the ISRO Young Scientist Award for the year 2011. She was selected for her contribution to the project on National Urban Information System-10K for the NE region as the Principal Investigator, reports The Shillong Times.
The award carries a citation and cash of Rs 50,000.

She is currently working as a scientist at the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Umiam.Read more..

Aurangabad Corporator Promotes ‘Shirpur’ Model to Harvest Rainwater

To cope with increasing water problems, Vishwabharti Colony corporator Sadhana Suradkar has proposed that the 'Shirpur pattern', in which run off rainwater is obstructed in nullahs, be implemented by Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) states a Times of India report.

She has proposed that small obstruction walls be built on the 11 nullahs running through the city to conserve rainwater. These connect to the two main nullahs which flow out into the river.Read more..
